Honington, RAF Regiment museum.

RAF Honington is now the home of the RAF Regiment. This is the only unit of the British forces that has been on continuous active service since its creation, and they do have an interesting history! This small but excellent museum contains items from all over the world, from the many deployments of the regiment. A small sample here.

There are large exhibits, like this armour,

There is a fair selection of artillery too.

There is a collection of small arms, with some oddities like this training rifle. It does not fire anything, but was used close to a miniature card target and when "fired" a needle projects forwards and pierces the target to show where a bullet would have gone. A silent indoor trainer!

There is also a selection of munitions and mines.

This shows some of the older radio kit.

There are some rarer items like this Smith gun, a smoothbore short range weapon, a favourite of the Home Guard.

This is an Alan Williams turret, a sort of pre-fabricated pillbox.

Essex Secret Bunker, Furze Hill, Mistley.
