Many airfields have hardened aircraft shelters, but not many look like this one. Someone has been a bit careless with the high explosive here! This was one of a few subjected to testing of demolition techniques.

To give you just a clue as to how big these Cold War airfields are, this is a view from the control tower. This shows the view from about halfway along the main runway! (Which is in the distance, not the taxiway in the foreground)
